This "Quirino" virus has hit her hard. After 2 weeks, she has finally started to recover (and after I connected the humidifier in her room).
Get well, mom!

My sister in law Silvia couldn't have said it better.Mamaua, my grandmother, is like a little candle that is slowly burning down.
She is 93 years old and she is still fighting for her life.
We have a little inside joke in our family (the younger ones that is; if the older ones knew about it we would get into so much trouble!). Every year we go through the same drill: this might be Mamaua's last Mother's Day; this might be Mamaua's last birthday; this might be Mamaua's last Christmas; this might be Mamaua's last New Year. And then we start all over again. Yet she still manages to prove all of us wrong. Stubborn woman even in senility!
Lately though, I've started to believe that his might actually be her last year.
It might sound harsh, but I really don't relate to her. She was never the image of a grandmother to me. She had her inner issues, and even more after my grandfather and two of my uncles died in a matter of a couple of years. She was always distant and rejectful. Truth be told, I never really liked, much less loved the woman, but she brought my mom into this world and I will always be thankful for that.
Anyways, for the past few months she has had her ups and downs. In senility, she has actually become fun (if that word can be used towards her). Well, at least she doesn't pull back and make a face or start mumbling when we come visit. Her health has also deteriorated to the point that my aunt (with whom she has always lived), has to call the ambulance service a few times a week. And yet she still manages to hang on.
My poor aunt does not have a life. Because she had to take care of my grandfather and my grandmother (back then, the younger kid always stayed home to take care of her parents), she never had the chance to marry or have a family of her own. The only thing she has always had in her life were my grandparents: Eventhough we, her nieces and nephews, have always been there and loved her almost like a mother, at the end of the day we all head home and she stays with grandma. When Mamaua does actually join Papi Toño (my grandfather), tío Toñito and tío José (my uncles) and tía Mercedita (my aunt whom I never met 'cause she died when she was only 12), tía Loly will be devastated.
So, this morning when I left for work, I saw the ambulance coming and I immediately knew it was headed to tía Loly's (we live in the same building), so I headed back home. The paramedic and my aunt are buddies now (after all, he comes all the time, I think he even visits more than I do!). After he checked her up and prescribed some medication, he headed out and Mamaua actually managed to mumble a thank you to the guy.
I tell you, she's going to outlive us all...

I'm sorry, I enjoy reading your stuff, but the strain on my eyes is just getting to be too much, so I'm going to have to stop visiting your site if you keep up with it...

Not guilty?

Congrats to Michael Jackson on his not guilty verdict. He will now join OJ Simpson on my book titled "Justice Was Most Definitely Not Served."
Now, let me tell you something. The next father or mother that lets their kid get even a mile close to Wacko Jacko should be bitch-slapped and be sent to share a cell with Charles Manson and Dr. Hannibal Lecter at Rwanda or at the local La Victoria Prison.
Maybe Wacko should be the one sent to those places.... let's see if he likes it...

He dicho...
Enough said...

No wonder!

This weekend I found out something that has made me think a lot.
As I've previously mentioned, Gertrudis has been doing my hair ever since I was 15. In all these years of religiously going to the salon on Saturdays, I've met a few characters. Some people I've liked, other have had really no influence in my life and other I've just plainly disliked. Of the latter, there is one kid that comes to mind: Ambar.
Ambar was the kind of kid that everyone disliked, not because of anything special, just because she was herself. I've known her mom, who also went to the same salon I did, ever since she was pregnant with Ambar. Her mom is a cool lady, the complete opposite from her daughters.
As Ambar was growing up and started going to the salon, she annoyed me in different ways. I've always said I am not a people person, and I specially don't like kids (curiously, I´ve said that while kissing one of my nieces or nephews or playing with a kid or being nice to one... go figure), but Ambar had her way of making me lose my cool. I clearly remember her playing with her dolls and just acting weird. Her way of talking (she had this tone that made me want to bitch slap her), her way of walking, her way of acting.. everything about her bugged me. And I wasn't the only one who felt that way. While Gertrudis was doing her hair Ambar kept complaining that she was burning her scalp, and though it may have been true, most of the times the blow dryer wasn't even close to her head! The kid was a nightmare!
This Saturday I saw her mom at the salon. Gertrudis changed jobs about 5 years ago and I followed to her new salon (a much bigger one than the one she used to work at before), so I hadn't seen Ambar's mom in a while. I asked her how Ambar was doing and she said that, finally, after all these years, they had found out what was wrong with her (apparently, her manerisms and attitude didn't go unnoticed to her family). She had been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, which is like a form of Autism. She was doing great, her mom told me, and was truly developing her enhanced skills.
When I got home I did some research and while reading the characteristics of Asperger's, I saw them all in the Ambar I remembered.
Ambar is 16 now and she's doing comics and really complex drawings on her computer.
I'm sorry if I was ever mean to you. I was also a kid back then.
I hope you can forgive me.

Vamos a ver

My new photoblog

I have decided to open a new blog.
Be warned, it is not like this one, but rather a photoblog.
Most, if not all of the posts, will not have written words, but a title and a photo.
It will be mainly composed of things that I see or catch my attention.
Some of them might have a meaning, others might not.
Feel free to leave your comments on these pictures, and to post any suggestions or requests you may have.
Please be advised I am not a professional photographer or anything even close to that, I am just a girl who carries her camera around with her and snaps a pic whenever she feels something worth of freezing in time.
I hope you enjoy them.

My life, seen through a camera lens...
